Gallaudet University Shows How "Being Deaf" is Worth Being Heard

At Gallaudet University "being deaf is not something to overcome, but a process of understanding oneself, building connections within and beyond the signing and deaf community."

Located on 99 acres in Washington, D.C. Gallaudet is a place that both blind and hard of hearing individuals can call home.

Statistically, 97% of graduates are either employed or furthering their education.

94% of undergraduate students recieve some kind of financial aid, and tuition and fees are 38% less than the national average for public out-of-state tuition.

Whether you are a new, emerging, or fluent signer, you’ll receive a full and comprehensive academic experience by their 8:1 Student-Faculty Ratio.

“We really need to shift the mindset to have people see that this is not a disability,” said Dr. Khadijat Rashid, interim dean at the Gallaudet facility. “It’s really just a language barrier issue. If you teach deaf people in their language, they develop just fine like everyone else. When you pass by someone on the street, you don’t know if they are deaf. They are just human.”

In 1816 Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet came from Paris france, across the Atlantic to open the first school for the deaf in the country. That dream came true in 1864 with the assistance of Congress and Former President Abraham Lincoln creating Gallaudet University.

Gallaudet offers undergraduate majors and minors including American Sign Language, Art and Media Design, Business, Communication Studies, Counseling, Deaf Studies, Education, English, General Education, Government and Public Affairs, History, Honors Program, Interpretation and Translation, Linguistics, Philosophy and Religion, Physical Education and Recreation, Psychology, Self-Directed Major, School of Science, Technology, Accessibility, Mathematics, and Public Health, Sexuality and Gender Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Theatre Arts, Undergraduate Continuous Enrollment, and World Languages and Cultures.

The University offers a home, and a place for the deaf to be heard, to be seen, and to make an impact.
