15-year-old ROC Figure Skater Kamila Valieva scored a 178.92 in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics Free Skating Team Event. This occurred moments before a drug test came back positive for a banned substance that enhances endurance.
The test was taken on Christmas Day, and came back positive for an angina drug this past Tuesday. The drug is known as Trimetazidine (a heart medication that boosts blood flow and improves endurance). The World Anti-Doping Agency will be looking into this case before Valieva is expected to compete next. Valieva's 178.92 also proved to assist in ROC winning the team gold, but that medal is currently in question.
UPDATE: It has been decided that Valieva is allowed to continue to compete in the 2022 Olympics but if she wins the medal ceremony will be canceled. This means that Valieva and the ROC get to keep their team gold.
