Its no surprise that many will recall Shaun White as a snowboarding legend. He currently holds the title for most Olympic gold medals by a snowboarder, and has won 10 ESPY's over the years.
White's Olympic career began in 2006 at the Winter Olympics where he won gold in the half-pipe. In the first round in qualifications White scored 37.7 but redeemed himself with a 45.3 in the second go. In the final round White scored a 46.8. It is important to note the highest score possible is a perfect 50.
Heading into 2008's Winter Olympics all of the attention fell to White as he captured a "near-flawless second run," in doing so White earned his 3rd consecutive snowboard halfpipe title. That same year White realeased his first video game 'Shaun White Snowboarding.' The game became the 20th best selling game of December 2008.
White won the gold yet again in the halfpipe at the 2010 Winter Olympics. White scored a 46.8 on his first run which was high enough to win without a second run needed. "He performed his second run anyway, as a victory lap, ending his run with a well-anticipated Double McTwist 1260 which he named The Tomahawk." The second run earned a 48.4.
In 2012, White became the first person in the history of the Winter X Games to score a perfect 100 in the men's Snowboard SuperPipe.
Flash forward to 2014, White finished fourth at the Winter Olympics in the Halfpipe event, but was the most talked about athlete on Facebook during that time.
2018 proved to have a big impact on White's career. While training for the Olympics in New Zealand he crashed into the edge of a superpipe resulting in 62 face stitches. White ended up winning his third Olympic gold medal for the Men's Halfpipe event earning a score of 97.75. "His gold medal was also the 100th for the United States at the Winter Olympic Games."
"White was the first to compete and medal in both the Summer and Winter X Games. He is also the first snowboarder ever to land back-to-back double corks, at the Red Bull superpipe. He remains the only skater to land the frontside heelflip 540 body varial. (The Armadillo). He was the first to land a Cab 7 Melon Grab in vert skateboarding. He is the first snowboarder to win back-to-back gold medals in the Winter X-Games SuperPipe. He is also the first athlete ever (on snowboard or skis) to win gold medals four years in a row in the Winter X-Games SuperPipe. He is the first (and only) person to win both a Summer and Winter Dew Cup. White was the first to "three-peat" in SuperPipe at the Winter X Games. White holds the record for the highest score in the men's halfpipe at the Winter Olympics. In 2018, he scored 97.75 on his last run."
With all of his accomplishments thus far and four Olympics, White, a 35-year-old athlete has opted to go into his fifth and final Olympics. When speaking in an interview with PEOPLE White spoke on the 2022 Olympics, ""I still feel amazing and my heart is still in it, even if the tricks are getting a lot harder, but I definitely feel like these games will probably be my last." Recently, White has launched 'Whitespacesnow' on January 13th which includes outerwear and ski clothes.
White's official status on the US Olympic team will be announced on January 21st.
