Under the American Women Quarters Program, between 1 and 5 women every year will be chosen until the year 2025 to represent the 'tails' side of the U.S. quarter. This year, Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong were chosen to represent the United States for their incredible work during their lives.
Maya Angelou was well known as a writer, poet, and civil rights activist, and will become the first black woman on the US quarter.
Dr. Sally Ride became the first American women in space in 1983, she was the third women in space overall. She joined NASA in 1978. Ride also was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Wilma Mankiller was the first female principle chief of the Cherokee Nation. She was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993, and that same year was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
Nina Otero-Warren was a leader in New Mexico's suffrage movement, "Voto Para La Mujer" also known as "Votes for Women."
Anna May Wong was the first Chinese American movie star in Hollywood.
Janet L. Yellen, the Secretary of the Treasury, stated "Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about out country - what we value, and how we've progressed as a society," and each of these women have contributed to the advancement of our country in a very significant way.
